Martin more than glad to stand by, but expects no complications for Gordon
CONCORD – Mark Martin said he’s honored to be asked to stand as an “on-call” driver for Jeff Gordon next month.
Mark Martin said he will travel to Sonoma, Calif., for the Nextel Cup race there on June 24 to be present in case Gordon needs to leave to be present for the birth of his daughter.
“Hopefully, it won't come to that, but I do admire Jeff for his commitment to be there when his daughter is born,” Mark Martin said.
"I think that is awesome. He's in a great position and it is an honor, a real big honor to me, that they though enough of me to really pursue me.”
Gordon is 718 points ahead of 13th in the standings right now, meaning he could miss a race and still not be in much danger of falling out of the Chase for the Nextel Cup.
Mark Martin was not scheduled to race at Sonoma as part of his partial 2007 schedule. Regan Smith will drive the No. 01 Chevrolet there.
"There is not any major planning right now,” Mark Martin said. “I expect things to work out perfectly for Jeff. We are just going to be in position to help him out and try to give him a good solid performance."
